GLUG PESCE - Online Sessions

GLUG PESCE recently selected new CORE Members . We came up with Online Introductory Sessions and wanted to incorporated them into the online session
This space would be updated with list of Online Sessions conducted by GLUG PESCE and importantly we would like to write up a small summary and blog at the end of the session.

Peep into this thread later on for now information :slight_smile:

Sessions will be conducted every alternative day for 1 hour to 2 hours.


Online Session#1

The first session is “FREE SOFTWARE and FREE SOFTWARE MOVEMENT

Agenda :

  1. An Introduction to Free Software

Summary

Today we had our first online session on “Freesoftware and Freesoftware movement”. We started at around 3:10 . We had around 26 participants who actively participated.

The topics dealt were,

  1. Free Software
  2. Four Freedoms of freesoftware
  3. Necessarity
  4. The difference between movement and foundation was introduced.
  5. Briefly introduced about the FOSS alternatives.

At the end we gave a small task to “Get a Mastodon Account created”

We ended the session at around 5:10 and we had a positive feedback from participants side too.


Online Session#2

The second session is on “ICEBREAKER , GLUG and ITS PURPOSE”.

Agenda :

  1. Icebreaker(activity)
  2. What is GLUG?
  3. What is the purpose of GLUG?
  4. How does a glug function?
  5. Brief history of GLUG-PESCE.

Let’s have some fun in this session by playing a fun activity and learn about our GLUG. Hope to see you all in the next session.

Summary

Today the session started at around 3:10 . We started with playing a small fun game.

We had around 18 active participanted. We discussed the following

  1. What is a GLUG?
  2. What is the FSF, FSMI, FSMK?
  3. What is the purpose of GLUG?
  4. What GLUG should inculcate in thier members.
  5. Campiagns that GLUG-PESCE have been part of and supported.
  6. At last back to history of GLUG-PESCE.

We concluded the session with importance of a strong community as a GLUG that we can be !!!

We also received a positive feedback from the participants. Any everyone enjoyed the session :blush:


Online Session#3

The third session in our online series is

“INSTALLATION OF GNU/LINUX and BASIC COMMANDS”.

Agenda :

  1. Different ways to install GNU/Linux : live boot, dual boot, persistent live boot and virtualization.

2.Hands on for installation of GNU/Linux using live boot technique.

3.Basic terminal commands.

  1. Assignment 2 ( The PDF of assignment is attached below. Follow step 1 and step 2)

Summary

There were around 26 participated and as assignment we asked our participants to download LinuxMint 19.3 Tricia iso file and at the end of the session everyone had live LinuxMint running in their machine.

  1. Different techniques of booting GNU Linux i.e., -Virtualization -Live boot -Persistent live boot -Dual boot -Single boot.
  2. Pros and Cons of each booting technique
  3. [Hands-on] Persistent live booting of Linux mint 19.3 Tricia.
  4. Importance of terminal and Hands on for basic terminal commands.

A feedback asked us to go more hands-on which we are planning to in coming days :slight_smile:


Online Session#4

The fourth session in our online series is “Copyright & Copyleft Discussion”

Agenda :

  1. Introduction to Copyright, Copyleft
  2. Importance of Copyleft
  3. Implementing Creative Commons license

Schedule : 26th April, 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm.

The fifth session in our online series is “Localisation”

Agenda :

  3. How to contribute ?

There were around 23 active participants. We started our session at 3:10 pm and winded up at 4:45pm

  4. Discussed about contributions like Namma fedora , localisation sprints and few others.

The sixth session in our online sessions is on " IMPLEMENTATION OF 4 FREEDOM ".

  2. How Free Software differ from Open Source Software and Proprietary Softwares.
  3. Free Knowledge and Open knowledge
  4. Demo and implementation of 4 freedoms.

The session saw around 21 active participants, started around 3:10 PM and went up till 5:20 pm.

In the session the following was discussed :

  1. Showcasing the difference between proprietory, open source and free and open source.
  2. Discussed different types of softwares and licenses for FOSS, Open Source and Proprietary.
  3. Explained four different freedoms with a demonstration
    • Downloading searx from official repo
    • Hosted searx on localhost
    • Made some simple modifications in source code and tried to host it again
    • Pushed modified source code to GLUG PESCE repo with FOSS license.
